Organize Your Work Place

WHY JOIN THE LABORERS UNION?

As a worker, you have a RIGHT under federal law to form a union, select representatives of your choice and bargain collectively with your employer. This helps balance the power that an employer has over his individual employees.

Belonging to a union gives you rights under LAW that you do not have as an individual.

Once you have formed a union, your employer under LAW must bargain with you over your wages, benefits and working conditions such as safety.

WHY IT PAYS TO BE UNION

Through collective bargaining, unions have helped raise the standard of living for millions of American workers. There is a distinct economic advantage in belonging to a union and working under a union contract – and particularly under an Laborers negotiated collective bargaining agreement.

Union workers earn 26 percent more than nonunion workers, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Members of the Laborer’s Union also enjoy the benefits of full family healthcare which include medical, dental, vision and prescriptions.

Advancing Your Career Through Training and Education

Laborers union members are afforded the opportunities to improve and upgrade their skills and consequently, their wages and responsibilities through union sponsored education and training programs.

The Laborers Union is acknowledged as the leader in providing training programs in the construction industry.

A Voice at Work the Boss  Can’t Ignore

Belonging to a union gives workers contractual and other legal rights they do not enjoy without union representation. Being union gives workers a voice on the job, and their collective voices form the union that makes their voices more influential with management than any individual voice.

Belonging to a union allows you to establish a written agreement that specifies the terms of your employment. Once you have formed a union, your employer is required by law to bargain with you over your wages, benefits and working conditions.

HOW DOES THE LABORERS UNION WORK?

The Laborers Union is an organization based on the rules of democracy, where all have a voice and your vote counts. The basic idea of a union is that by joining together with co-workers to form a union, workers have a greater ability through their strength in numbers to improve conditions on the job. In other words “In unity there is strength.”

The primary purpose of the Laborers Union is to represent workers in their employment and to negotiate a contract that improves wages, benefits, and working conditions and protects workers from unfair treatment. The basis of the contract negotiated with the employer is determined by the workers affected by the proposed contract. After the contract is negotiated, it can only take effect if it is voted on and approved by the workers.

Officers are nominated and elected from among the members the local union every 3 years.
